Ashdown Forest - Old Lodge NR

The weather is not exactly brilliant at the moment, especially if you're a bird photographer. In fact it's been a pretty rubbish 'winter' for photography!
The only sunny afternoon last week was spent at Old Lodge Nature Reserve. Quite a bit of bird activity although I didn't manage to spot woodlark, the great grey shrike (which remains a species I have yet to see for the first time) nor the Dartford warbler that a lucky birder had watched the previous day.

But as you know, I don't desperately "need" a new or rare species to enjoy my day out birding. I'm happy to watch any bird.

There was a lovely fieldfare (or probably more but I only spotted the one) and I managed a shot that is much better than my previous 'record' shot of this beautiful winter thrush.

There were three bullfinches - two males and a female - in the same bush but they weren't willing to pose for a photo.

We saw robin, blackbird, chaffinch, great spotted woodpecker, siskin, crow and - to my suprise - a flock of at least 10 reed buntings.

I watched plenty of goldcrests feeding, along with coal tit, blue tit and great tit.
20+ redpolls (mostly lessers but I am fairly certain I spotted a couple of mealies) were very active flying from tree to tree, feeding and taking off again. Lovely!

On the way back to the car, I spotted two or three crossbill with a beautiful male on the look-out.

What I enjoyed the most was listening to numerous coal tits and great tits singing their little hearts out. Spring has officially arrived!

Wow! Have I really not updated my blog since September?! Very embarrassing. But in case you were wondering, no, I have not quit birding and yes, I still enjoy bird photography as well!
There'll be more blog posts in 2012, I promise. :)

Some of the birding highlights I didn't tell you about last year include more whinchats (seen around Cissbury Ring) and a beautiful grey phalarope at Prinsted in West Sussex:

Then, in October, I finally saw crossbills on Ashdown Forest. Beautiful and fascinating finches! I really enjoyed watching them in the autumn sunshine, along with lots of siskins and lesser redpolls. Finch Fest!!

Also enjoyed the many wheatears - always good to see those little beauties. One juvenile bird allowed me to walk right up to it (very slowly of course) and get my best wheatear shots to date! More pictures can be found here: wheatear photos.

In November, lots of short-eared owls were reported in Sussex. Would I get to see my first ever wild owl? YES! At Waltham Brooks, I was able to watch up to four owls hunting at the same time. What a privilege!

In December, two snow buntings were reported on the beach at Shoreham (Widewater Lagoon) and as I just LOVE snow buntings, I had to go and see them! We did find them but they were spooked and flew off after two minutes. We went back twice but could not find them. Last week, we were lucky - the birds are still around (in fact were joined by a third snow bunting a few days ago) and we got to watch the pair for over an hour. Here's a shot of the female:

We also had a lovely time watching the beautiful firecrests at Pulborough Brooks (in December and also a few days ago) - not easy to photograph though! Always moving about, always hyper! Check out my firecrest photos

While I'm looking forward to some 'lifers' in 2012 (still loads of 'new' birds to see!), I am not a twitcher and I do not keep a year list. I just love to watch birds, their behaviour and, if possible, take a few nice photos. I can't wait for the summer visitors to return - the first swallow, the first whitethroat and I am always happy to watch and photograph 'common' birds. I just love them all!

Finally - a whinchat!

Well it's only taken about 1 1/2 years for me to see my first ever winchat...three days ago I finally saw my first Saxicola rubetra at Canon's Farm, Banstead (Surrey). And what a lovely little bird! It was perched on a fence most of the time but a bit distant so I only got a couple of record shots. But I'm not complaining! I can finally say: I've seen a whinchat! :)

Last Sunday, we went to Church Norton. Some good migrants have been turning up there in the last couple of weeks, including wheatear, whinchat, pied flycatcher and even a wryneck. Unfortunately it was very windy so any small birds that might have been around were all hiding - I only saw one chiffchaff. While watching a lot of swallows, I missed a sandwich tern that was flying right above my head (would have been a first for me!) - I saw a photo of it later that my partner took who was stood next to me. Oh well, a great start! Was this going to be another frustrating day? A trip to Seaford Head and Pulborough Brooks last Wednesday had been fruitless - I saw no migrants at all apart from two VERY distant wheatears.

On the beach, there were a few turnstones, curlews and oystercatchers - they were not willing to pose for a few photos. Great. And SO windy! Makes it VERY hard to handhold a heavy camera and lens!

When I was just about to give up, I scanned the beach for about 5 more minutes - and finally, there was some movement. A lone first-winter wheatear!

So the next few hours were spent trying to get closer to it without chasing it. It seemed to be getting used to me after a while, and I ended up just standing in the same place for a long time, after finding out which spots it preferred for feeding. And it eventually came to me, sheltering from the wind nearby, looking at me. The best shots I got when it was feeding behind the sea defences. I tried to duck & hide - it would only have seen my lens. It was SO cute - when it heard the clicking noise it came running (!) right up to me - it was only about 2 metres away from me - looking at me as if to say 'What ARE you doing there, silly - I do know you are there! Go on then, take a few shots.' :) Made my day!

Crested Tits

I haven't manged to get out and see whinchat, wheatear or any other migrants since I saw the hoopoe, mainly due to the fact that I was away visiting family in Germany for 10 days (and now that I'm back the weather is rubbish of course!).
I didn't take my camera or bins or anything but that didn't stop me looking out for any feathered creatures that might fly my way when we went for a walk in the very very green and beautiful "Sauerland" woodland. I heard and saw some goldcrests, chiffchaffs, treecreepers, great and blue tits, robins, a buzzard, 5 woodpeckers (I'm still not sure which - it just didn't sound like GSWs so could have been families of either middle spotted or lesser spotted, all of which can be found there).
When I was pointing out a goldcrest to my family, I all of sudden noticed a bird that I had been wanting to see again for ages: a crested tit! I only got a very brief view so returned to the same spot the following day (just can't help being a birder!). :) I was lucky, I found at least 4 crested tits feeding in the tree tops. At one point, one was feeding right above my head and then landed on the ground about 2 metres away from my feet. So even without bins, camera (or my glasses!!) I had fantastic views of this beautiful little bird and was a very happy bunny indeed! :)
Unfortunately my mobile was useless....these are the record shots I got - probably the worst record shots in the history of birding!

Hoopoe - Farthing Downs - Coulsdon

Wow, long time no blog! The breeding season's come and gone...migration is in full swing. Time flies!

The lack of blog posts doesn't mean that I haven't been out and about watching and photographing birds whenever possible.

Stonechats, Redstarts, Spotted Flycatchers and Sand Martins were some of the highlights during the summer and, as always, it has been a great joy 'meeting' the new generation, such as the young blackcap pictured above.

So maybe no 'unusual' birds since the wryneck at Pulborough Brooks in May (there is in fact one present again right now!) but I love watching house sparrows and finches and all of the 'common' birds - I don't need a rare migrant in order to come home with a smile on my face after a day's birding.

Having said that - while I'm not a twitcher - I do of course want to see 'new' birds whenever I can. When a hoopoe was reported at Farthing Downs, Coulsdon (Surrey) - which is only about 45 mins from here - I obviously really really wanted to see it. It's such an unusal bird with its long bill, brilliant crest, pink/orange plumage and black-and-white wings that it really is a bird that any birder wants to see. It was first reported on Sunday 14 August and then relocated on the Wednesday. I wasn't able to go until Friday and was very lucky - it was still there! A lifer for me and what a FANTASTIC bird. It wasn't very confiding but seemed fairly happy to be watched from a sensible distance. It was spooked by dog walkers, joggers and a very territorial kestrel every now and then but kept returning to its favourite spot along the main path. A magpie appeared and seemed very interested in the unusual visitor, just like us birders! It kept edging closer to the hoopoe until they both seemed to be exchanging greetings before feeding next to each other. Brilliant behaviour to watch! Here's some of the shots I got of the hoopoe:

Still haven't seen a whinchat - and they're all over the South Downs at the moment (there was one at Coulsdon but not when I was trying to find it!). I have HEARD a grasshopper warbler but not seen one. Oh well, I WILL see these birds and many more I haven't seen yet despite trying to. Something to look forward to! :)

The new generation

Spring is my favourite time of year - first all the migrant birds come back and sing, and then the new generation appears.
In my own garden, I have had two juvenile dunnocks, at least six baby house sparrows being fed by their parents and, since yesterday, three lovely and cheeky young starlings. They beg for food the whole time - they even tried to get a blackbird (also busy collecting food for fledgelings) to part with its food. A joy to watch!!

When I heard about two little grebe chicks that had successfully hatched not too far from here, I just had to go and see them. They are SO cute (so are adult little grebes!). I had also been after a shot of a little grebe riding on the adult's back for a long time - but obviously not an easy photo to get. Little grebes can be rather secretive and are very fast swimmers.

When we arrived at the site, the grebes were nowhere to be seen. No shortage of baby birds though!

Also plenty of mallard ducklings, young moorhens and coots.

After a couple of hours I finally spotted the two little grebe chicks. Interestingly, no adults in sight but a black-headed gull that showed too much interest in the little ones...luckily, they managed to hide in the reeds and the gull flew off. Phew!

Oh and I've also got an adult grebe for you doing a balloon impression! :)

Anyhow, a few minutes later, an adult grebe appeared with a big fish. No idea how the tiny chicks managed to swallow it!

The adult then swam off and returned with another, much smaller fish a bit later. And this time the chicks followed the adult and tried to climb up on their back (you can't tell whether this adult is actually a male or female). I think they are getting a bit too large now to be doing this but I was lucky - one did manage and I got a couple of shots. The light wasn't brilliant, either too dark or - when the sun came out - it was a bit harsh. Well always something wrong with 'the light' isn't there. ;)

What you think is the adult grebe's rump is actually the second chick's bottom - it didn't manage to climb up onto Mummy or Daddy's back!

So I'm really happy I got to see this special behaviour and got a couple of shots to look at and share with you as well.

Kingfishers!

We had a lovely afternoon yesterday watching kingfishers and chatting with like-minded bird and photography enthusiasts (hello Julie, very nice meeting you!). :)

I love kingfishers - they're such beautiful, colourful birds and a joy to watch.

I also got a few nice shots. When I looked at my photos this morning, I decided to edit the background- something I don't usually do. I like to show a bird in its typical habitat, so I feel the background should be left alone...I only clone out the odd twig or leaf that might distract from the bird. This time however, I wanted to bring out the kingfishers' beauty and specifically emphasize their amazing colours by contrasting them with the background. I used the colours that were already there in the original shots (almost black, green and brown) and basically softened them. I quite like the result - a bit like a photo session with kingfishers in a photo studio. I hope you like my shots too!

Nightingales, Osprey and Wryneck at Pulborough Brooks

Long time no speak! My temporary silence was not caused by a lack of birds though!

Pulborough Brooks has been our favourite birding spot of late - there's just so much going on with all the warblers back from Africa and singing their little hearts out, record numbers of nightingales performing well and the odd rarity...

Also blackcaps, lesser whitethroats, chiffchaff, willow warbler...so lovely to watch and listen to.
I was also looking forward to hearing the nightingales at Pulborough and maybe catching a glimpse of one. I was in for a real treat - I didn't just catch a glimpse of one or two but got to watch several perch right out in the open and sing. Magic!!!!

Another highlight last week included a totally unexpected osprey flying over the reserve. I even got a shot of it! Not a bird you get to see every day....

This morning, a wryneck was reported at Pulborough Brooks - a very rare visitor, especially in spring. Again a bird I'd been wanting to see for ages. I kind of expected it to have disappeared by the time we got there and the first birder we met on our way to the field where it had been spotted told us he had not seen it. Oh well...
However, when we arrived at the field in question, there was a mini twitch going on with birders in the field and along the fence, pointing scopes and cameras at a hedge that the wryneck had apparently disappeared into. Too far away really for my 400mm lens...so I tried to get closer to the fence, despite nettles and bramble (ouch - you should see my legs!!)...the breeze didn't help either. But the bird was still around so I was quite happy to wait...when people behind me shouted out 'there it is!' I couldn't spot it at first (typical!) but then it came out into the open, feeding among cattle and rabbits. Phew! It was almost impossible to get a sharp shot of, it was just too far away. It then flew up onto a fence post posing nicely for the few birders that had been patient and a green woodpecker perched behind it. Quite a sight!

It was then spooked by a rabbit and flew into the hedge. Yay, I'd seen it!

We then walked around the reserve and had great views of a pair of whitethroats looking for a nesting site (at least I think that is what they were doing) and saw three lapwing chicks (awwwww!) and a greenshank from West Mead Hide. Unfortunately there are two wasp's nests in the hide and I didn't like the wasp that decided to buzz around my head. I wasn't able to spot the little ringed plovers, yet again.

When we returned to the place where the wryneck had been, there was no-one else around. I had a good look around the field and finally managed to relocate it! It was also a little closer to the fence so I got a couple more record shots. What a beautiful bird!!

Wood Warbler, Redstart and...Ashdown Forest Fire!

After reading about the sighting of a rare wood warbler on Ashdown Forest yesterday (and a kind fellow birder who shared its location, thank you, if you're reading this, you know who you are :) ), we decided to try and see it before heading over to Old Lodge Nature Reserve.
When we got there, we couldn't hear the warbler singing but after a while I did hear its call and finally spotted the bird high up in an oak tree. I got a very poor record shot before it flew off after only a few seconds. But hey, we saw it! We did hear it singing briefly a couple of times but weren't able to relocate this little beauty. A lifer! Such a shame they don't breed on Ashdown Forest anymore.

We then headed to Old Lodge NR but there wasn't much about apart from a fantastic male redstart, the first we've seen this year.

We then noticed smoke rising above the trees and thought it might be a fire in someone's garden. Wrong!! The fire seemed to be spreading rapidly... my partner phoned the fire brigade immediately. Luckily, they were already aware of the problem and a few minutes later we heard the sirens approaching. The fire was right next to a car park up the road from Old Lodge and most likely caused by arson or carelessness (barbecue, cigarette...). Very sad...birds are nesting on the Forest, so many small animals live in heather and gorse...I really hope the fire is under control now and no animals were killed in the flames. Apparently 8 fire engines were sent out to put out the fire.

Whitethroats!

Couldn't wait so popped down to Pulborough Brooks yesterday afternoon. Sunshine, bird song and the bluebells are out...beautiful!
The first bird that greeted us when we stepped out of the visitor centre was a swallow (I did get a fantastic shot of one of its wings *lol*) and lots of chirpy house sparrows.

I really couldn't wait to finally see my first whitethroat 2011 (they are my favourite migrant warblers after all!) and I didn't have to wait much longer.
So this pretty little guy is officially my first whitethroat of the year! :)

Many more whitethroats were singing cheerfully around the trail - and how I had missed their grumpy-sounding alarm call! Just love it! :)

I then heard a bird singing in a clump of bramble but couldn't identify it at first. It was a repetitive warbling sound, a bit like a football rattle and I remembered a fellow birder mentioning exactly this to me last year - could it be a lesser whitethroat?? Sure enough, I soon spotted the bird - and indeed it was a lesser - but it flew off before I could take a photo. I'd only ever seen one lesser whitethroat before so this was a lovely surprise!

We'd only been walking for about 5 minutes when I heard the first nightingale (well, my second of the year - I can hear one singing every night now when I'm in bed!). We listened to it for a while and although we knew which bush it was hiding in, we couldn't spot it...but its song was magical!

More signs of spring included a male bullfinch feeding a female, chaffinches mating right in front of us and whitethroats collecting nesting material. Here's a rubbish shot of one:

Walking along 'adder alley', we heard our first cuckoo of the year. Yay!

When I heard the sound of a 'football rattle' again I knew what to look out for! And indeed, a beautiful male lesser whitethroat showed surprisingly well - unfortunately he was backlit so the shots I got are quite poor (but still better than the only shot I managed last year!). Here's one:

No sign of the grashopper warbler that was reported a few days ago but we saw a nightingale flying into cover, a striking male reed bunting, a willow warbler, singing dunnocks and several goldfinches:

A crow alerted us to a bird of prey flying above - it was a peregrine carrying what looked like duckling prey.

More whitethroats, nightingales and blackcaps were singing beautifully when we walked back to the car.

Got back last night from a week away visiting family in Germany. So while this visit was not about birding, there were some lovely garden birds that I got to watch every day, including a fantastic pair of bullfinches - never had views that close before! Also got myself a couple of books about German birds - should be interesting.

I'm looking forward to seeing some spring migrants this week that have returned in the meantime, such as whitethroats and nightingales. But guess what - I have already heard my first nightingale, within hours of getting home - lying in bed at about 3 am I could just about hear one singing in the distance. :)

At last - wheatears!

A few days ago we decided to go to Pagham again - still hoping to find a wheatear. With more and more sightings all over the country (and indeed at the exact places we have been visiting) it was actually hard to believe we still hadn't seen our first Oenanthe oenanthe of the year!

We first stopped off at Pagham Spit - there were a few lovely linnets and the pair of ringed plovers was still in front of the hide, along with a few turnstones but nothing much else around. Any wheatears anywhere? Nope.

So on to Church Norton! On the way up to the beach, we had a chat with a nice couple who had also spent the morning birding. Had they seen anything good? Not really, just the usual waders and a few warblers (sounds good to me though!). Any wheatears? Oh, yes, they saw quite a few a couple of hours earlier, around the visitor centre at Sidlesham. Right...ok then, maybe pop over there later (but what were the chances of the wheatears still being there...whenever we arrive somewhere, they've moved on!). So we decided to check out Church Norton first, as planned.

Lots of linnets around again, singing from the gorse bushes and also quite a few greenfinches. There appear to be more in West Sussex this year than ever before which is great! I'm actually just looking at one on one of my bird feeders as I type this, happily munching away on sunflower seeds! A male in breeding plumage...stunning! So we walked up to the beach, scanning the shingle and shoreline for birds but the tide wasn't out yet so not many waders around.

Back on the path, I all of a sudden noticed movement on the ground, between two gorse bushes. I really had to stop myself from shouting out loud: a wheatear!! And: a MALE wheatear at that, exactly what I had wanted to see the most (the wheatears we saw last autumn were all females so I really wanted to see a male as well)! The bird was on the shingle, busily feeding on insects. It wouldn't let us come close so we just took some record shots and watched it for a while. We soon realised that there were at least one other male and a female, also busy feeding. Fantastic! Finally. :)

Male wheatear We soon left them to feed in peace. Walking towards the severals, we heard a Cetti's warbler singing and willow warblers & chiffchaffs were busy hunting insects.

Willow warbler Chiffchaff While taking photos of these beautiful little warblers, we heard the Cetti's again and were amazed to actually see it flying into a tree right in front of us! Not a bird you get to see very often! I managed to get a couple of shots - not perfect ones, as the warbler was trying to hide behind a twig but I'm still chuffed to bits that we saw it and got a photo or two to prove it - definitely better than my previous record shot. :)

Male Cetti's warbler Two mute swans were flying over only to return a few minutes later and eventually landing on the beach. I have to say that it was a rather unusual sight! A swan on the beach!

Other birds of note were five sand martins in off the sea, redshanks and oystercatchers. I was actually sure that the first hirundine I saw flying above us was a swallow (or possibly a house martin) but it disappeared too quickly; the distant shot I did get of another bird following the first one shows a sand martin.

Do swallows ever travel together with sand martins? Or would house martin be more likely? Anyway, lovely to see any hirundines!

When we arrived at Sidlesham later, there were no wheatears there at all - so just as well we'd spotted our own on the beach! :) Two beautiful male linnets posed for us - quite unusual really, they tend to be so shy.

An afternoon visit to Pulborough Brooks a couple of days later produced our first (definite!) house martin of the year, a swallow, a wren collecting nesting material and lots of singing chiffchaff, willow warbler and blackcap. I was hoping to see my favourite migrant warbler, the whitethroat - two were reported a few days ago and also the first nightingale. Very early! We didn't see (or hear) either so I shall look forward to our next visit there! :)

Brambling!

Just being treated to fantastic views of a female bramling...in my garden! Only the second time ever I've seen one here (first time was a male in the snow before Christmas). She seems to like my bird seed. :) Birding from the comfort of my desk...just need to turn my head. Brilliant. :D Also got my bins for some really good views!

There's also a greenfinch - a fairly rare visitor - and all the regulars, including blue tits, great tits, dunnock, chaffinches, blackbirds, goldfinches, collared doves and starlings. Need to top up the seed feders later!

Climping / Pulborough Brooks

....and so it continues. We went to Climping the other day - no wheatears. Got home and had a look online: Climping sightings of the day included 9 wheatears and 2 black redstarts, one male about 200 yards up the road from where we were - for its second day. Why wasn't it reported the day before then maybe we could have seen it too... and a whinchat was also seen in the morning...another bird that I tried to find in vain last autumn. Never seen one! So you'll understand why I might just feel a LITTLE annoyed.

I guess we just need to stop looking for a specific species and it'll turn up when we least expect it. Oh, and of course I did lose the photos I took the other day. No idea why but the files were all damaged and could not be recovered after my card reader died on me. Very annyoing! I had some really nice shots of grey plovers and a little egret in flight and several of a male green woodpecker. Oh well...

OK I bet you've had enough of the whining now and rightly so! Let's move on to the birds that we did see at Climping. I really like sanderlings and there were a lot of them about.

A beautiful male kestrel was hovering above us and a joy to watch.

The highlight were a pair of ringed plover and I managed to get better records shot this time. Impossible to get close to, the birds didn't seem to like people and I obviously didn't want them to get stressed out. So I watched from a distance. These little waders are just SO cute! :)

We then decided to move on to Pulborough Brooks for a late afternoon stroll around the reserve. It was beautiful!

The sun was shining and there were birds and bird song all around us. Spring has definitely sprung now!

Chiffchaff

Dunnocks, robins, chaffinches, greenfinches, blackbirds and songthrushes were all in full song...it just sounded wonderful!

A male chiffchaff perched and sang in a bush right in front of us. Lovely! I manged to take a nice shot of him - definitely one of my best chiffchaff photos! Such beautiful little birds.

We then spotted FIVE blackcaps (the first of the year too!), four of which were males pursuing and singing to one female.

Male blackcap singing Imagine the song of four blackcaps together...amazing! On the way back to the car park a couple of fieldfares flew over - I was surprised they haven't left yet.

So the resident birdies at Pulborough (and the return of the first few warblers) made up for the earlier disappointment! Rarer migrants are special, of course and I'm still hoping to see wheatear, black redstart, whinchat etc. but I do love all of the 'common' birds that I can watch and get to know through the seasons. It is starting...

...to get a bit frustrating now. There are wheatear sightings all over the place (including the places we visit on a regular basis) but we still haven't seen one. For the 6th time now we went to where one or more had been seen and dipped. Yesterday, 11 (!) wheatears were seen between Goring Gap and Ferring...so we went today and...nothing. And then I get home and read about wheatears seen at Pagham and even Pulborough Brooks today. Also, a male black redstart, a bird I have been wanting to see for ages, had spent a few days at Ferring Rife...but of course had left by the time we arrived today.

Birding can be really frustrating at times...and the few photos I did take today I can't access now because my stupid card reader has packed up - who knows, it might even have damaged the card. *GRRRRRRR*

On a positive note, I saw my first swallow of the year today and also dunlin, sanderling, grey plover, oystercatcher, little egret and green woodpecker.

Pagham Harbour

We had a nice sunny day birding at Pagham today. I really wanted to see a wheatear but unfortunatley, yet again, there weren't any to be found anywhere. A few were seen in the area a few days ago... but not by me!
Anyhow, when we arrived at Church Norton, the 'pigeon' perched in a tree turned out to be a male kestrel and I managed to get a few shots before it flew off.

The tide was coming in so there weren't many waders on the beach.

There was a chiffchaff hunting flies in the reeds (by the second Severals) and a Cetti's warbler was singing.

Two chaffinches were fighting and a linnet was perched in a bush, preening. On the ground, I spotted my first peacock butterfly of the year.

We then moved on to Pagham Spit, again hoping to find wheatears. A skylark was singing above us and two ringed plovers were in front of the hide, along with some turnstones. Unfortunately, before we had even entered the hide to get some better views, they all flew off. So I only got a couple of record shots of the ringed plover. Beautiful little birds!

Two female scaups were on Pagham lagoon (too far away for any decent shots though), along with a great crested grebe, a coot and quite a few black-headed gulls (couldn't find a Mediterranean gull in there).

My personal highlight of the day was a lone sand martin that I spotted hawking over the water.

New Forest

On Wednesday, we decided to spend the day birding in the New Forest. Quite a drive but we were hoping to finally connect with a Dartford warbler - the last one we saw was at Pagham Harbour last October. None on Ashdown Forest so far this year, which is a bit worrying - I hope they all survived the winter!

Our first stop was at Blashford Lakes. We saw a lovely female lapwing from Tern Hide and a wonderful, fluffy little grebe in breeding plumage, goldeneye and gadwall (no water pipit, snipe, sandmartin or ringed plover though!).

We then moved on to the Woodland Hide where I was hoping to get a few more shots of brambling before they all fly off to their breeding grounds. After about 10 minutes a beautiful female appeared and I got some nice shots of her (much better than the poor record shot I got before!), followed by at least 4 lovely males, all coming into breeding plumage (one looked particularly smart).

We also had lovely views of a nuthatch, a coal tit collecting nesting material, a siskin, a lesser redpoll, a greenfinch, a wren and some blue tits.

We then tried 'Picket Post' heath but could not find any Dartford warblers. There were loads of meadow pipits, a raven and a fantastic buzzard circling right above us.

I also saw a common lizard enjoying the sunshine.

And of course there were some beautiful ponies! Being a horse person, I always love seeing them.

So we drove around for another 20 minutes trying to find a certain site that we know is supposed to be good for Dartfords. Again we walked around for what felt like 50 miles but no Darties. More ponies of course, a mistle thrush, meadow pipits, skylarks and stonechats. Time to give up?

All of a sudden, on the way back to the car we thought we could hear the song we had been hoping for all day...and scanning the gorse nearby we saw him: a fantastic male Dartford warbler! Brilliant!

We also saw the female perched on top of the gorse behind the male.

Looking up, I noticed a bird of prey flying low over the heath. Wow, a beautiful male hen harrier - a lifer!

Warnham LNR

We spent a couple of hours at Warnham LNR on Monday morning. The crested grebes didn't feel like courting (still haven't got any photos of them dancing, boo-hoo) but the common redpoll decided to pose for me this time. So I managed to get a couple of nice shots, yay!

Also, a nice surprise when I was trying to get a shot of a dunnock on the ground: a little bank vole (I think that's what it is anyway!) said hello! :)

I have had confirmation from several bird experts that my photos do indeed show a mealy redpoll plus, this morning, someone else who apparently saw the bird at Warnham Nature Reserve yesterday reported it to birdguides.com. So a 'life tick' for me (not that I keep an actual list but I do love to add new birds to the 'list in my head' and to my bird photo gallery)!

I also saw a merlin yesterday afternoon but will blog about our visit to Pagham later.

Mealy Redpoll?

In glorious sunshine, we popped down to Warnham LNR this morning. The flock of redpolls has grown quite a bit - there were at least 10 birds on and around the Woodpecker Hide nyger seed feeder. I always watch the redpolls as I'm really fond of them - and of course I always hope I might spot a mealy among the lessers. And today I think this might have happened!
One bird stood out. A female, much larger than the other redpolls, very pale with no brown on her chest/sides/upperparts and a bright white wingbar. Having studied quite a few photos and having read several articles on how to tell the two species apart, I am fairly certain that this bird is a mealy. I only managed a couple of poor shots before the bird flew off but you can clearly see how different it looks from the lesser redpoll.

If anyone thinks I'm completely wrong, please do get in touch. I do hope it is a mealy...a lifer for me! :)

Pagham Harbour

As it was sunny this morning, we decided to pop down to Pagham Harbour, hoping we might find an early migrant or two. We first checked out Pagham Spit where we found a red-breasted merganser (drake) and a little grebe - two firsts for the year.

Not much else of note - apart from 100+ dark-bellied brent geese that were put up by a Royal Navy helicopter.

We then moved on to Church Norton, where the first two birds we spotted were a redshank and a curlew. When I looked up, I couldn't believe our luck: a female kestrel was hovering right above us, looking for prey. We had cracking views and watched this beautiful bird for about 20 minutes. Despite several attempts, she didn't catch anything while we were there. I managed to get a few nice shots that I will add to my gallery asap.

We still hadn't seen any migrants (I had hoped there might be a wheatear around somewhere) when I heard a familiar alarm call: the first chiffchaff of the year! It was feeding in the shrub and was in very good condition. Lovely! Roll on spring!

Near the Severals, we heard a Cetti's warbler and then walked down to the beach, where we saw oystercatchers and had lovely views of a couple of turnstones.

On the way back to the car, we saw a pair of teal (beautiful!) and a curlew flew over. The kestrel was still hunting in the distance.

Ashdown Forest

The weather was so lovely yesterday that we decided to spend the afternoon on Ashdown Forest, hoping to find a Dartford Warbler. One of my favourite birds! Always a special treat to see one - check out some of my DW photos here:

While we couldn't spot any Dartfords anywhere (boo-hoo!), we did see a couple of croaking ravens, a buzzard, a kestrel, a pair of stonechats and several skylarks.

A male skylark was displaying and singing beautifully high up in the sky.

Another two skylarks were feeding on the path in front of us, giving us lovely views. One then flew up and perched on a gorse bush for a few seconds. Beautiful birds!

Once bittern....

When I entered the bird hide at Warnham NR this afternoon, I was slightly worried. A bittern had been spotted yesterday and, according to the warden and a few other birders, it was still there. So while I was looking forward to a potential 'lifer', I also remembered Blashford Lakes where I was THE ONLY PERSON in the hide who failed to catch a glimpse of the bittern. I was determined not to leave the Heron Hide before I had seen it as well, and without bins!!

Guess what, I did see it! My first ever bittern. It was hiding, pretending to be a reed, far away on the other side of the lake but hey, it was there! I can even prove it. Trust me, there is a bittern in there somewhere!

No? Can't see it? OK, let me help you:

Not the worst record shot of all time either! Quite pleased actually that although it was so far away you can still see what it is.

I have finally seen a bittern! :)

Having dipped on waxwings about 6 times so far this year, I was getting a bit frustrated. On Tuesday night, I read about a waxwing sighting in Crawley, West Sussex - about 20 minutes from here. Were we finally going to connect with these beautiful Scandinavian birds again?

When we arrived in Crawley (Southgate) yesterday morning, they were indeed there, 17 of them, perched high up in a tree. This was promising! And the sun was shining! They were trilling away and I thought they'd come down to the apple tree they had been feeding in any second. After a few minutes, they did all take off...and disappeared. Nooooooo! We waited another 55 minutes but they didn't return and it was getting really chilly, despite the sunshine. D'oh! :(

So we decided to pop down to Warnham Nature Reserve and come back for the waxwings later.

Within five minutes of arriving in the Woodpecker Hide we got lucky and got the shots we'd been wanting for weeks: one of the male sparrowhawk that perched right in front of us for a few seconds and one of a beautiful marsh tit. And in decent light...yeah!

After a great couple of hours watching woodland birds, we went back to Crawley but the waxwings didn't appear to be there. We were about to drive off again when I spotted the waxwings up in the high tree. The light was now perfect - but would the waxwings eventually feed on the apples again? So we waited for about 20 minutes and they finally did descend onto the apple tree - about 24 of them! Absolutely fantastic!!!! We got some lovely shots and had enough time to also stop to just watch them. Wonderful birds.... :)

Arundel

We had a great day out birding at Arundel (West Sussex) yesterday. Finally some sunshine! It really felt like spring. I saw a butterfly (brimstone, see above), a bumblebee and some snowdrops (first ones I've seen this year!).

We first went to Swanbourne Lake to look for the two firecrests that were reported last week. I saw my first ever firecrest at Arundel WWT last year - so I guess they're wintering birds from the continent that really like the area and return every year.

As we'd dipped on waxwings several times in the last two weeks (every time when we got to a place where they'd been seen, they were gone or, at Epsom, ONE was there as we drove past but had disappeared when we got there with our cameras), I was not really too hopeful.

But we were lucky this time! We soon heard the call we were hoping for. At least two firecrests (at one point I'm fairly certain I saw three) were flitting around ivy, looking for insects. Fantastic little birds! One male was calling and flashing his bright orange crest. Brilliant.
Firecrests are very active little birds so it is extremely hard to get a decent photo of them. I'm really pleased I did get a few shots. This is one of my favourite pix:

We also saw a couple of goldcrests, chasing each other. One was also displaying, showing his yellow/orange crest:

We then had lunch at Arundel WWT and had a walk around the centre but didn't see much. From the car park later, we saw two distant peregrines in a tree and up to four buzzards circling above us. A majestic sight! Here's one of the photos I took:

Blashford Lakes - 18th January 2011

We had a lovely sunny (!) day at Blashford Lakes (New Forest, Hampshire) last week. We'd never been before (and it is quite a drive - took about 2 hours to get there). I was particularly keen to see siskin, redpoll and brambling and maybe a bittern. While everyone in the bird hide except me caught a glimpse of the latter (*grrrrrrrrrrr*!!), the finches did not disappoint. I managed to get some nice shots. I'll post the links to the photos as soon as they have all been edited and uploaded to galleries.
We are definitely going to visit Blashford Lakes again!

This head study was drawn in pastels. Unfortunately it didn't scan very well - the background is really light blue.

Hi everyone,
I am busy working on an A3 sized horse head study in pastels and a pastel portrait of a Labrador. I have just finished a small pastel of a Parson Russell terrier but can't show you this one yet as it is a birthday present for the owner. I might be able to show you a scan of the Labrador next time!

It's also rather quiet on the wild bird front at the moment but here's a new photo for you of a cute juvenile great tit (Parus major):

Dachshund - Pastel Portrait

I have just finished this small head study of a German Dachshund X called 'Trixi' (size slightly larger than A5). Sadly, Trixi is no longer with her owner who is very happy with the pastel portrait of her little dog.

I'm now working on another two dog portraits and also have a horse portrait coming up. Keeping busy! :)

Dartford Warbler

Right, this has got to be my favourite bird shot so far - it's of a Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata). Bird watchers/photographers know how rare they are and they suffered badly last winter. So I'm happy to report that they're still around. :) We watched this beautiful male for a while and he performed really well, singing his little heart out. I am aware that this is a schedule 1 bird and we did not leave the footpath or disturb the bird in any way. This is the closest/sharpest and thus best shot I got and while I know that some of the bird is a bit hidden, I don't mind. Dartfords do spend most of their time hidden in the gorse. Still can't believe I really saw a Dartford Warbler and got a fairly decent shot to prove it! In fact, I am absolutely chuffed to bits! :)

I'm busy working on a new cat portrait. It's a British Shorthair cat called Tweety and she's being drawn in pastels on Sennelier Pastelcard. Here's a 'work in progress' scan for you. Still working on her eyes and will then move on to her ears.

As mentioned in my last blog post, I might show you some of my latest wild bird photos every now and then. In case you didn't know, I am also into wildlife photography (click if you'd like to visit my photo galleries) and love to go out with my Canon 7D (DSLR) and try and get shots of wild birds. Not easy but fun! :)
So here's a couple of shots of a male reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) that I took yesterday. Enjoy!

Oh dear, it's been a long time since I last updated my blog! I have not been lazy though and have finished several horse and dog portraits since then - just need to upload them to my website. I've also been out and about with my camera a lot. I am wondering whether to show some of my new photos on my blog as well before uploading them to my photo galleries. I could of course create a photo blog but as you know, I can't even keep ONE blog updated! *lol*

Anyhow, I thought I'd show you a new otter portrait.

British Wildlife Centre keeper Izzy was given this pastel portrait of her favourite otter 'Thistle' last week. Head keeper Matt kindly sent me a photo of happy Izzy and her portrait - I guess you can tell she liked it!! :)

New dog portraits

I hope you have all been enjoying your Easter break! I've been very busy but am definitely going to update my blog more often again! I'm quite angry with blogger actually as I had to move my blog back to blogspot and now all sorts of problems make blogging a nuisance. This is actually my third attempt at showing you scans of three of my latest dog portraits (well one is from last year but for some reason I never uploaded it!). The first two posts got zapped when I tried to move the scans around. Very annoying and such a waste of time! Nevermind...

So first up is 'Pebbles', a Labrador cross I drew last year (pastels, quite small - A5):

Then there's the portrait of 'Buddy', a beautiful yellow Labrador who lives in Australia. The portrait shows him doing what he loves best: swimming and playing with his tennis ball. Buddy was drawn in pastels (size A3).

Last but not least, I did a small (A4) full body pastel of Racker, a Rough Collie. The portrait was an Easter gift to his owner. She loved it and apparently shed some tears as sadly, Racker is no longer with her.

I am now working on two horse portrait commissions, one pastel and one charcoal. I'll show you some scans asap but they are both birthday presents so you'll have to wait. ;)

Minnie the otter and Dame Judi Dench

This is a pastel portrait of Minnie the European otter. She lives at the British Wildlife Centre in Surrey, England.

Dame Judi Dench has adpoted Minnie so I decided to give this portrait to my favourite actress. I was lucky enough to meet her at the stage door of the Rose Theatre in Kingston last week and she seemed to really like the portrait. :) If you'd like to see some photos of Dame Judi and the portrait, please visit Minnie's portrait page on my website.

Apart from two dog portraits that I'm about to start (one of a Weimaraner and one of a yellow Labrador), I am currently working on another portrait of Andalusian stallion 'Fandango' (click here if you'd like to see the first one I drew of him).

His owner was so happy with the portrait that she's commissioned another one. This time it's a full body portrait - again drawn in charcoal. This is how far I've got:

I have just finished another charcoal portrait of the beautiful Friesian stallion 'Dirk van de Jonker'. I was first commissioned to draw him last June - you can check out the first portrait and some photos of Dirk and my portrait here. Very sadly, Dirk passed away last July at only 8 years old and his owner was devastated - he really was an exceptional horse. He is still dearly missed and Dirk's owner loves the new portrait which, so she told me, captures everything she loved about her stallion: his beauty, his strength and that special look in his eyes.

Legally Blonde - the musical!

OHMYGOD you guys! I finally went to see ‘Legally Blonde – The Musical’ at the Savoy Theatre last night and it has to be one of my favourite musicals… or maybe it IS my favourite show ever! I was totally captured from the moment the music started until the curtain fell. If you want a fun night out – this is the show for you. It’s for all girls from 8 to 108 and, although they will not openly admit this – blokes love it too! I couldn’t see anyone who wasn’t smiling, clapping or singing along.
The whole cast is extremely talented, full of energy and seem to love every minute of their performance. Sheridan Smith is absolutely amazing. I saw her in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and she was so good…but incredibly, she’s even better in ‘Legally Blonde’. Her great voice, her sense of humour, her ability to bring across any kind of emotion and make people believe she means every word… she is just brilliant. Plus she looks amazing!
‘Legally Blonde’ the film was ok…’Legally Blonde – the musical’ however is a must-see and if you don’t go and see it, you really are missing out. If you are interested in getting some tickets, check out this site (it's where we bought our tickets and I can highly recommend it).
I take my hat off to the cast and the Legally Blonde team and would SO TOTALLY go and see it again (hopefully I will!). SNAPS!

Not long to go now - three portraits to finish off. Phew! I'm looking forward to a couple of wildlife portraits that I'd like to draw/paint from my own reference photos during the Christmas break. I haven't used watercolours for a while so can't wait. :) I'm also going to edit loads of wildlife photos and upload them to my galleries. Anyhow, I've still got quite a bit of work to do before I can relax! Better get on with it...

Dame Judi Dench and update

No I haven't forgotten about my blog! I've been very busy with Christmas commissions (mainly dogs and horses) that I can't show you yet for obvious reasons. I'm also in the process of putting together new animal photo galleries. I've had my new SLR (Canon 450D) for about 6 weeks now and am quite happy with the results. Still learning how to use it though!

I will be using some of my own wildlife photos as refs for a series of paintings as soon as I get some time.

Oh and I forgot to tell you! About three weeks ago, I shook hands with my favourite English actress Dame Judi Dench! She happened to be watching the same play (her daughter is in it), sitting only a few rows away from me and I ended up looking at HER most of the time rather than the stage *lol* (the play was really good though - it's called 'Bedroom Farce' and is on at the Rose Theatre in Kingston). Towards the end of the interval, as she was on her way back to her seat I decided to be brave, seize the opportunity of a life-time and asked her whether she'd shake my hand and make my day, my evening and my year...me being such a fan. She smiled and said 'course, course!' There was no time for a 'chat' as the play was about to start again (next time! LOL) but I was absolutely over the moon. Wow, what an experience! Back in my seat I started trembling like mad! I've got tickets to see Dame Judi at a charity event in November and in 'A midsummer night's dream' in February. Can't wait. I just adore this woman. We also had a chat with Sir Peter Hall, Stephen Unwin and Peter Bowles. What a wonderful evening!!

A farewell to a special fox

This blog post is dedicated to a very special fox. Buster, who lived almost 13 years at the British Wildlife Centre in Surrey, passed away last Thursday and will be missed by centre owner David Mills, staff and visitors.

I always look forward to seeing the foxes there and am very sad that Buster won't make an appearance at the fox talk anymore. He was such a lovely fox.

A few weeks ago I donated a painting of Buster and his two children Frodo and Pickles to the centre.

I hope Buster was greeted by his 'partner' Honey when he crossed the rainbow bridge and they are both young and healthy and happy again.

Farewell Buster...you'll be missed and never forgotten.

Legally Blonde - the musical

Have you seen the film? I was lucky yesterday. We went to the press launch of 'Legally Blonde - the musical' in London, starring Sheridan Smith and Duncan James. The show opens at the Savoy Theatre in early December. The producer - Sonia Friedman - and some of the cast were there (including Sheridan Smith and Peter Davison - some might remember him as Dr Who - and the cute little dog was there too) and there was some singing and dancing. Here's a pic - sorry, we took it with a mobile so the quality isn't great but hey, we were there! :)

We were about 3 ft from the small stage and what can I say - it was absolutely fabulous! This musical is going to be such great fun..I can't wait to see it. Sheridan's voice is amazing - I had seen her before in Little Shop of Horrors and she'll be a perfect Elle Woods. If you'd like a taster, click here:

I am currently working on four horse portraits and have just finished another two. I can show you one of the finished ones and one pencil draft - the others are birthday and wedding surprises.

This is the pencil draft of a charcoal horse portrait showing young Friesian gelding 'Nicky'.

This portrait I have just completed - it shows the Friesian gelding 'Watse M'. Sadly, he is no longer with his owner who still misses him a lot. She is very happy with his portrait.

So I have tried the new paper I bought (Sennelier pastelcard) and I do like it! The colours come out great and you are able to smudge the pastel (which is impossible on velour paper). I really enjoyed painting this horse portrait - it shows a Shetland pony stallion. I'll soon use this paper again but first it's back to velour. I'm doing a little project for our local wildlife centre. I'll tell you more about it next time!

Back from holiday!

Hello everyone,

We got back from a lovely holiday in Germany yesterday (yes! We DID have sunshine! Even got a TAN!!). :o)
So I'm now going to update my blog regularly again and will also keep working on my new website design - many more pages still to go. I went to a great German artshop called 'boesner' (do google them - they have an online shop as well) and have brought back different types of pastels and paper. I was particularly happy to get hold of one type called 'Sennelier pastelcard' - it's sanded pastel paper probably similiar to the new Fisher 400 that a lot of pastel artists seem to like. Can't wait to try it! I will probably do a Shetland pony stallion - I took his photo at the Sussex Shetland pony show earlier this month. I also want to do lots of wildlife drawings and paintings from my own photos (foxes, otters etc.) and also experiment with acrylics on canvas. The latter won't be realistic animal portraits for a change - I'd like to have some 'fun' with colours and express emotions....I'll keep you posted. Hope you've all had great holidays!

Hello everyone,

I hope you are enjoying your summer (and maybe the weather is actually pleasant where you are)!
As some of my readers will have noticed, I'm in the process of redesigning my website, hoping that google will like it better when it's all finished. I have got a LOT of pages though so it is very time-consuming. I have done the main pages and am now moving on to the gallery pages. I'm quite pleased with the result so far. What do you think? It took days to get the main template to work. HTML is probably fairly straight forward if you're an expert but I'm not - so every step is an achievement really. I've learned a lot about the coding in the process (it's different from my previous site) and there's so much more to learn! So as you might gather I have not been spending too much time on my art (apart from a couple of commissions I'm working on).

We have also been out and about with our cameras - went to a Shetland pony show last weekend and to our local wildlife centre yesterday. Fun! :o)

Our washing machine broke down yesterday so that needs sorting out ASAP...NOT FUN!!

Holiday time but luckily I'm still busy. I have just completed several cat and dog commissions and am now working on a pastel portrait of a cute spaniel. We've also been out and about to the local zoos and parks and I will soon add photos to the photography galleries - I really enjoy this. We saw two meerkat babies yesterday - born in early July - I can't describe how cute they were. They're so very very tiny! I'll post some artwork in progress on here again soon.

I am currently working on a horse pastel portrait showing three horses. Two are Norwegian fjord horses and one is a Shetland X pony. Here's a (not so great) photo of the pencil draft. I'll post some work in progress scans as I go along.

The composition mirrors the fact that the two Norwegian fjords look after the young Shetland cross in 'real life'. The client was very happy with the pencil outline.

Riiiiiiiight, I thought I'd post my latest draft. Not that anyone actually ever reads my blog posts (apart from a couple of people every now and then maybe) but nevermind. A blog is the thing to have these days!

The new pastel dog portrait on velour paper will be of another Parson Russell Terrier - this one is very old (15 I think). I just love those huge eyes that are so typical of terriers! The pose is rather unusual but I think it'll work really well. As the dog is looking up I felt I needed to show one of his legs so that the pose would 'make sense'...I think it really does now.

I've also been spending quite a bit of time on my animal photography pages and will soon be able to let anyone who might be interested have a look. I'll post the link here asap.

Unexpected visitor

We had an unexpected visitor in our garden this morning and were lucky enough to be able to take some rather lovely photos through the window. This red fox slept in one of our flower beds for an hour or so, mainly ignoring the neighbour's cat that didn't seem to like the canine in 'HER' garden. Later on, the fox climbed over the garden fence (about 6 ft) and disappeaered. I do hope he'll come back some time! :o) Foxes are so pretty.
I shall upload more fox photos to my 'red fox photography' page and one day when I've finished all the pages I'll let you all have the link(s)! *lol*

Parson Russell Terrier puppy - portrait finished

Right, I have completed the dog portrait of a little Parson Russell terrier puppy held by a human hand. The hand was a bit of a challenge so I am very pleased how it turned out. It actually LOOKs like a hand! The dog's owner is over the moon with the portrait and is going to commission another 2 portraits. I have to say that I prefer velour paper to other types of pastel paper now, especially if it is white pets I'm drawing.

It's 20 years today that I first met my Icelandic horse 'Kolbakur'. On May 1st 1989 my parents very kindly took me to an Icelandic horse stud and generously bought 'Kolli' for me, a 9-year-old black Icelandic gelding. I must have been the world's happiest girl! Kolli was part of my life for the following 17 years. I lost him in February 2006.
So this blog post is for you, Kolli.

Right, here it is. The British Shorthair cat pastel portrait is finished. The background is really a soft light green not neon - thank you very much yet again, scanner. ^^

What is it that makes cat portraits harder to do than horses or dogs...or is it just me? I'll be doing a pastel on velour next...a sweet Jack Russell Terrier pup on velour. Looking forward to that one! Well apart from one thing..the puppy is being held by a human hand. Oh dear... I have drawn hands before and thought they were a nightmare. Oh well maybe it'll be easier this time. I'll keep you posted!

Cat portrait WIP

This is a new WIP scan of the British Shorthair cat (the horse portrait is finished but I can't show it until after the recipient's birthday in June). It's not easy to make the fur look soft but I hope I'll get there. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do any work this weekend due to a migraine with all the bells and whistles. Quite awful really and I don't feel great today either but at least I can sit up straight and don't feel quite as sick anymore. So hopefully I'll be able to get some work done today as the cat's owner can't wait to see the finished portrait. She's a lovely lady who I've drawn 4 portraits for in the past. Don't you just love customers who keep coming back for more!

I have finished one of the photography pages (the one about my favourite zoo animals - meerkats!) but I'm still debating whether to let you have a peek or wait until all the pages are finished (in the distant future...it is just SO time consuming!). I won't spend as long on the other pages though...I just wanted to add some meerkat information and make it a 'proper' meerkat web page. I guess you can tell that I love meerkats! ;o)

After a lovely sunny weekend, partly spent at Marwell Zoo (we took about 250 photos) :o) I have started two new pastel commissions. One of a British Shorthair cat and one of a chestnut horse. I'm attaching scans of the pencil outlines below and will keep you posted on the progress!

I'm also working on an animal photography web page as I'd like to show some of the photos my partner and myself have taken of various zoo animals, wildlife and farm animals.

I'm still here and promise I shall update my blog more often again. I have not been lazy - there's 3 birthday/anniversary surprise portraits that I have been working on (2 horses and 1 cat) . Oh and one horse that I can show. Here's the work in progress (pastels):

I have also been out and about with my camera - I love taking photos that I might use as reference photos in the future. Last week we went to a British Wildlife Centre - maybe I should show some of my favourite pix on my website. A lot of portrait artists I know are also good photographers - not surprising I guess!
Anyhow, I have also been drawing a pencil portrait of my favourite English actress - Dame Judi Dench. I saw her on stage in London last week (in 'Madame de Sade') and she is as wonderful as I'd imagined. The rest of the cast were great as well.
Seeing Dami Judi on stage had been a dream of mine for years and as we had really good seats (stalls, row D), it was the most mesmerising experience. It is true - there is nothing like a Dame! And certainly nothing like Dame Judi. So I've been trying to draw her - I don't draw humans very often and have to say always find it a challenge - but a welcome one, especially if I 'know' and like the person I'm drawing and know exactly how I want them to look on paper. I hope it turns out the way I'm hoping..and if I recognise the actress I love in my own work then I'll show you the result! ;o)

Spring has sprung! What a lovely day today...was it sunny where you are? We went for a long walk in the local nature reserve and it was great.
I have finished a couple of pencil drafts for two new commissions but I'll show you those in my next blog post. Here's two new portraits for you to look at first...
One I mentioned before of a dachshund X from a rather old and thus poor photo...I am pleased how it turned out. The second one is a watercolour portrait of a Friesian mare - I really enjoyed painting this beautiful horse.

Hi everyone!
Here's an update. I'm working on two pastel commissions - one of a dachshound X and the other of a Briard and rabbit. I'll show some scans soon.
Also, I've decided to get more 'serious' with watercolours so got myself a set of Windsor & Newton wcs and have gone through my 'reference photo' folder for pix I'd like to paint. Inspired by a lady on Wet Canvas who has done wonderful watercolours of Exmoor ponies, my first wc will be of an Exmoor foal. I took the picture myself last year at Knepp Castle (there's a small herd of Exmoors roaming the grounds). This is the pencil draft:

I guess I have been neglecting my blog!

I have been working on a couple of horse portraits both of which are now finished (I can't show them yet as they are birthday presents).
I have just started a dog montage portrait - it is of a beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback called 'Kruger'. Sadly, it is a memorial portrait as Kruger is no longer with his owners. I am drawing him in pastels as a puppy, adult and old dog. Here is how far I've got:

Long time no blog! I have finished all my Christmas commissions in time so can relax now and draw and paint for fun for a few days before I start working on the January commissions that I've got lined up.
